Spear fishing and Snorkeling
At wilderness we have the experts to help you enjoy the underwater adventures that our oceans have to offer.
Spear fishing has been a great way to get a feed of fresh seafood for centuries. Here’s some information that may help you choose just the right spear fishing equipment & gear to get you that fish.
Handspears
We stock an extensive range from aluminum, fiberglass and stainless steel handspears. These are available in one and two piece as well as telescopic. For travelers check out our short 3 piece handspears. Aluminum models are most popular because of their low price available in raw or anodize finish . Fiberglass hand-spears are more effective because of their strength and weight ratio. Stainless handspears are just as good with the advantage of strength and will never rust . For the novice we stock your basic hand spears – which are easy to use and safe . All spare parts are available whether you need clusters, prongs, extensions, spare rubbers, handle grips etc.
Spearguns
We have stock a huge range of spearguns. Once again to suit the novice spear fisher, with easy to load speargun rubbers to advanced spearo’s using the latest technology of carbon fibre and pheumatic propulsion. The brands available are Asso, Undersea, Sea hornet spearguns and accessories, JBL, Omer, JB Esclapez, rob allen, Cressi, Picasso, Pelaj, Orca, assassin, Pescau and Mares…
Timber spearguns
Generally handcrafted from Tasmanian Oak or American oak have a different feel underwater, they are more buoyant than aluminium spearguns. Generally quieter yet start around the same price as other guns.
Pneumatic Spearguns
These air powered spearguns, once pumped up, should last for 300 shots. Mares, Cressi, Omer and Asso spearguns are quieter than rubber powered guns, also just as powerful. The quieter the gun, the less chance you have of spooking off the fish.
When you purchase the pneumatic speargun for us you will receive a complete package, including: gun, shaft, line, loader handle etc.
Rail Guns
This latest technology has changed the way Spearo’s think and compete in the sport of spear fishing. The idea of rail guns is to incorporate a rail into the full length of the barrel. The spear shaft will float on a layer of water when released giving it greater power and with the aid of the rail a lot more accuracy. Railguns generally have thicker walls reducing barrel flex. So if your serious or just want to get more enjoyment out of spear fishing see us for the best range of railguns in Sydney. And of course at the lowest prices.
Spearfishing Fins
Spearfishing fins are different to dive fins. Dedicated freedive / spearfishing fins are longer and more efficient than regular scuba or snorkel fins. Spearfishing fins vary from soft entry level fins through to stiff rubber and the latest carbon fibre models. Talk to our experts for the best fins at Sydney’s lowest prices. We stock brands such as Scuba Pro, Omer, Tusa, Pescau, Mares, Sporasub and JB Esclapez
Dive Masks, Snorkelling Masks & Spear Fishing Masks
When choosing one of these the most important feature is fit and comfort. Silicone masks and the best and brands like Tusa Mares, Scuba pro, Sea Hornet, pelagic, Seeman, Land & Sea, Mirage, Wildsea’s make some of the best.
Generally a Spear fishing mask is low profile (this means there is a small amount of space between your face and the masks lenses) so when duck diving down underwater you only need to expel a smaller amount of air from your lungs to “equalize” your mask. Allowing you to stay underwater longer and potentially dive deeper.
Snorkels
These are so important to ensure safety and comfort. We carry a huge range of Contour Snorkels, Tusa platina, Imprex Hyperdry, Dry Top Snorkels and Scubapro. We stock The atoll for budget quality to the advanced spectra, shotgun, nexus and the fino. Especcially designed for spearfishing we recommend all black, Mares, Omer, Sporasub, or Sea Hornet with no purge system or hyperdry. All snorkels are quality silicon and we guarantee one here to suit your application.
Weight belts
Used to compensate the buoyancy of you dive wetsuit. At wilderness our experts will fit you our with the correct amount of lead weights to ensure your comfort and safety. We can also “custom” fit you out. Plastic buckles are the most common, however for a little more stainless steel weight belt buckles will last longer and are more secure. If you want the best spear fishing weight system, Omer make an awesome weight vest, made from neoprene and incorporating pockets to fit 1 or 2 pound dive lead in each.
Wetsuits
Wetsuits protect your body from stingers in the ocean, they protect you from the sun and most important they keep you warm. Remember they do help keep you buoyant. (This is where you will require a weight belt system to help keep you neutrally or even negatively buoyant). The correct fit is everything, a loose fitting wetsuit will allow water to flow through the suit, a wetsuit fitting too tight will be uncomfortable and restrict your breathing, and a perfect fitting suit will be a firm fit all over, Comfortable and looks good too!
At Wilderness our massive range will ensure we have the right one for you.
Short wetsuits and Spring suits are best used around non rocky outcrops and when the waters nice and warm. Where a full wetsuit or steamer will give more protection.
Some good spear fishing wetsuits are Adrenalin and Ballistic, Sporasub, Omer, Tusa, Mares Probe, Rip curl and Quicksilver. Thicknesses vary from 1mm to 7mm, with a lot of suits varying the thickness, ie a thicker neoprene over your body and thinner neoprene underarms and cuffs etc. Speak to us first before buying.
